Trump cautions NATO about a troubling future regarding defense in the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump’s Warning to NATO Regarding the Strait of Hormuz

President Donald Trump issued a strong message to NATO on Sunday, urging the alliance to support the United States in safeguarding the Strait of Hormuz or risk a “very bad” future. It was, perhaps, one of his most pointed statements on the matter.

In an interview, he emphasized the importance of cooperation among nations that rely on the strait, stating, “It’s natural for the beneficiaries of the straits to work together to prevent bad things from happening there.” He expressed concern that a lack of response—or a negative one—would bode poorly for NATO moving forward.

On a flight back to Washington, D.C., from Mar-a-Lago, he reiterated his previous comments, highlighting the value of collaboration among nations in policing the waterway. “It’s great that other countries will join us in this effort,” he said. He also noted his commitment to assist other NATO nations with issues like Ukraine, despite recognizing a lack of direct impact on the U.S.

While he pointed out that traffic through the strait is light at the moment, it seems the U.S. is prepared to escort oil tankers, ensuring safe passage through this crucial route.

Trump has called on NATO allies to step up their involvement in maintaining security in the Strait of Hormuz, where Iranian forces have reportedly made navigation challenging. He pointed out that the U.S. is now a net oil exporter, receiving only a small percentage of its oil from the Middle East, which might imply a different level of urgency for the U.S. compared to other nations.

He remarked, “It will be interesting to see which countries won’t help us with a very small effort to just keep the Straits open,” alluding to the limited capabilities Iran possesses.

Despite ongoing discussions, Trump remains hopeful that NATO allies will come together to share the responsibilities of securing the strait. He remarked, “We’ve been talking to other countries about not just security in the Strait, but working together, and I think we’re getting a good response. If we can do that, that’s fantastic; if not, well, that’s fine too.”

This emphasis on NATO has been a recurring theme for Trump, especially as he has previously raised concerns about member countries meeting defense spending commitments. His ambassador to NATO lauded the current administration’s efforts to promote higher defense spending among member states.
