Trump Attends Chelsea’s FIFA Club World Cup Celebration
President Donald Trump made a surprise appearance alongside Chelsea players at the FIFA Club World Cup Championship, where Chelsea triumphed over Paris Saint-Germain with a score of 3-0. The celebration took place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
During the event, Trump handed out awards and medals on the field. Interestingly, Chelsea player Cole Palmer expressed some confusion about the president’s presence. “I knew he was here, but when I lifted the trophy I was a bit confused because I didn’t know he was in the stands,” he noted afterward.
Palmer had an outstanding performance, scoring two goals and assisting on another, earning him the Golden Ball as the tournament’s top player. After the match, he remarked, “It’s a great feeling. It’s even better because obviously everyone doubted us before the game. Gafar put out a great game plan. He knew where the space was going to be.”
Trump attended the event with First Lady Melania Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino, marking an apparent strengthening of ties between the administration and FIFA, especially with the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup in the spotlight. As plans solidify for the event, which will be hosted in multiple North American cities, Trump has established a White House Task Force for it, appointing Andrew Giuliani as executive director.
Expected to be one of the largest international sporting events, the World Cup could attract about half a million visitors, potentially generating around $480 million in economic benefits for tourism and local businesses.
The upcoming World Cup will be notable as the first held across multiple countries in over two decades, primarily taking place in the U.S. cities such as Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and others.
