On November 18, 2025, President Trump nominated Robert Secada to lead the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF).
As noted on congress.gov, the Senate accepted Secada’s nomination and referred it to the Judiciary Committee.
Secada has been serving as the deputy director of the ATF since earlier this year in April.
The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) welcomed his appointment, highlighting his over 30 years of law enforcement experience. This includes two decades in various ATF roles, ranging from special agent to field division special agent in locations like Baltimore and Miami, alongside leadership roles at ATF headquarters.
NSSF Senior Vice President and General Counsel Lawrence G. Keene praised Secada, stating, “Deputy Chief Secada has the experience, wisdom, and respect of his colleagues to effectively lead the men and women of ATF.”
Keene went on to mention:
Deputy Secretary Secada respects the Second Amendment and views the firearms industry as a partner rather than an adversary. Firearms retailers play a crucial role in helping ATF combat violent crime and provide valuable information regarding illegal firearm purchases.
On Wednesday, the N.R.A. announced Secada’s appointment, stating: “Breaking news: President Donald Trump has appointed Robert Secada as ATF Director. Mr. Secada currently serves as the Deputy Director of the ATF.”
Knox Williams, President and Executive Director of the American Association of the Oppressed, remarked on Secada’s nomination:
If confirmed, he would be the first genuine Second Amendment advocate nominated to lead the agency. The appointment of an ATF Director who understands and respects our constitutional rights demonstrates President Trump’s commitment to Second Amendment supporters. We urge the Senate to confirm him without delay.
The situation surrounding Secada’s nomination will continue to be reported on in the Senate.
