Trump Suggests Cuba Is “Ready to Collapse”
President Donald Trump indicated late Sunday that Cuba might be on the brink of collapse following the U.S. capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro. He emphasized that Cuba can no longer depend on Venezuela for its security or oil supplies.
During a briefing on Air Force One, Trump remarked that Cuba’s future is now closely linked to the downfall of Maduro and Venezuela’s diminishing capacity to finance its allies. When asked about potential U.S. actions against Cuba, he seemed to downplay the necessity, saying, “I think things are just going to go down. They seem to be going down.”
These comments came after Maduro and his wife were detained on charges related to a narco-terrorism conspiracy, an operation that rattled neighboring governments. Cuban officials called for demonstrations in support of Venezuela, condemning what they termed U.S. violations of sovereignty.
U.S. officials stated that Cuban security forces played a significant role in maintaining Maduro’s grip on power. Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that Cuban operatives were integral to intelligence and security operations in Venezuela, including Maduro’s personal security.
On Sunday, the Cuban government reported that 32 of its military and police personnel were killed during the U.S. military operation, marking the first official acknowledgment of casualties. This event prompted Cuba to declare two days of national mourning.
Trump confirmed the Cuban losses during his return to Washington, stating, “Many Cubans were killed yesterday. There were a lot of deaths on the other side, but there were no deaths on this side.”
In his comments, Trump also targeted Colombia, accusing its leadership of contributing to drug trafficking into the U.S. He described Colombia as “very sick” and claimed its leadership was complicit in the cocaine trade, suggesting that the country “isn’t going to be around for much longer.”
Furthermore, he hinted at a U.S. readiness to engage with drug trafficking networks, voicing concerns about increased activities from Russia and China in the Arctic, particularly concerning Greenland, which he deemed crucial for U.S. security.
Trump framed the operation against Maduro as part of a larger strategy to reassert America’s dominance in the Western Hemisphere, referencing the Monroe Doctrine. He warned that hostile regimes should no longer rely on each other for survival.
Maduro is set for arraignment in federal court in New York on Monday.
