Claims of Election Fraud in Maryland

President Donald Trump has made accusations against Maryland’s Democratic governor, suggesting he was part of a significant scheme to manipulate the election. However, the state’s leading election official dismissed these claims as “misinformation.”

It has been reported that around 500,000 mail-in ballots were mistakenly sent to voters registered with the incorrect party affiliation. Due to the inability to track who received these ballots, officials are opting to send entirely new ones.

Trump alleged, “This was done by corrupt Governor Wes Moore. He allowed this to happen to ensure the Democratic Party won.” While authorities attributed the issue to a printer malfunction, the president has called for an investigation into Gov. Wes Moore regarding the incident.

He stated, “Maryland shipped 500,000 illegal mail-in ballots and got caught! So they’re going to send out another 500,000 mail-in ballots, but no one knows what’s going on with the first 500,000 they sent out. Plus, a lot of those went to Democrats, so Republicans running in Maryland have no chance!”

The State Election Commission released a statement on Monday indicating there was no risk of fraud, emphasizing that measures were already in place to prevent double voting. They highlighted, “There is no risk of duplicate voting as a result of this issue. Election officials have implemented safeguards to ensure only one ballot is accepted per voter. Each return envelope has a unique identifier, ensuring that only one ballot can be cast by each voter.”

Trump has urged the Justice Department to conduct an immediate investigation into alleged voter fraud.

Maryland’s top election official, Jared DeMarinis, responded to Trump on social media, stating, “It bears repeating that no counterfeit or illegal mail-in ballots were distributed. The language of President Trump’s posts about the Maryland election fosters an environment for misinformation regarding voting rights. Voting by mail is not a partisan issue. Voting by mail is legal.”

Officials noted that the printing company responsible for the error will cover the costs of the new ballots.

Trump has previously claimed that voter fraud has been a persistent issue in Maryland. He remarked, “This was done by corrupt Governor Wes Moore. He allowed this to happen to ensure the Democratic Party won. It never made sense to me that Maryland was automatically considered a Democratic state, but now I understand why. I’m sure this has been happening for years.”

The governor’s spokesperson, Ammar Musa, responded to Trump’s allegations, labeling them as “false and irresponsible.” He urged Marylanders to rely on the State Board of Elections for accurate information, rather than misleading social media posts that aim to undermine trust in elections.

In the 2024 presidential election, Kamala Harris secured Maryland with 28.7% of the votes, totaling approximately 900,000. In contrast, Joe Biden won the state in 2020 with 33.4% of the vote, which amounted to over 1 million votes.
