President Trump remarked on Thursday that California Governor Gavin Newsom should be grateful for the deployment of National Guard and Marines to manage recent protests in Los Angeles.
Trump indicated that conditions in Los Angeles have improved, thanks to the assistance of 700 Marines and over 4,000 National Guard personnel, who were sent to the city without a request from the governor.
“Los Angeles has been safe and sound for the past two nights. Our great National Guard has helped the LA police operate effectively, along with the Marines,” he stated.
He added, “Governor Gaven Newscum has completely lost control of the situation. He should be thanking me for saving his reputation, not justifying his errors and incompetence!!”
The president has pressured Newsom, accusing him of hesitating during protests and failing to address issues related to immigration enforcement, while the White House insists that local leaders were ineffective during the demonstrations.
Newsom attempted to limit Trump’s National Guard deployment in Los Angeles but faced a denial of his request for immediate intervention, leading to a hearing set for Thursday to address the governor’s emergency motion.
The governor has consistently pushed back against Trump’s actions, arguing that the military presence on the streets is causing significant and lasting harm to Los Angeles and its residents. He emphasized that this federal involvement must be halted immediately.
On Tuesday, Trump mentioned that the National Guard would remain in place “until there is no danger,” and described some LA protesters as rebellious. He noted that if he concludes there is a rebellion, he would “certainly” invoke rebellion laws.
The Pentagon has estimated that the costs associated with deploying the National Guard and Marines in California could be around $134 million.
