President Trump remarked on Friday that far-left Democrats, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York, seem to be distancing themselves from some of the radical positions they previously supported. He suggested that she may have aspirations to run for president in 2028.
During an interview with Fox News correspondent Alexis McAdams, Trump was prompted to discuss Ocasio-Cortez’s apparent shift away from her earlier advocacy for defunding the police and other approaches to crime management.
“If you really pay attention, they’re all saying the same thing,” Trump commented about progressive Democrats. “They’re trying to backtrack on their statements related to crime, like now claiming they support sanctuary cities.”
When asked directly if he believed Ocasio-Cortez was indeed preparing to run for president, Trump expressed his belief that she would.
While the congresswoman didn’t outright reject the possibility of a presidential bid, she indicated that her focus is currently not on the upcoming midterm elections.
Ocasio-Cortez, during an interview with ABC’s “This Week,” tried to downplay the extreme language associated with the “Walk 1” era, which was characterized by social justice activism during the pandemic and included calls to abolish policing and prisons.
Trump stated that certain Democrats are now trying to move away from the concept of sanctuary cities, which typically do not cooperate with federal immigration enforcement.
“Sanctuary cities are a disaster, and figures like her have contributed to that. They lead to increased crime,” Trump asserted.
He went on to emphasize that this situation began with policies like no cash bail, where offenders might simply be told, “Come back in two weeks” after committing serious crimes.
In her ABC interview, Ocasio-Cortez laughed about comments from a local council member who remarked that “Walk 1 was crazy.” She mentioned that it’s crucial to assess what candidates are saying currently.
Ocasio-Cortez’s office did not provide a response to inquiries from Fox News Digital at the time.
