Trump claims progress in Ukraine-Russia peace discussions, but challenges persist

Trump Remarks on Ukraine-Russia Conflict

President Donald Trump stated that there appears to be “progress” in the talks between Ukraine and Russia aimed at establishing peace, though he admitted that finding a resolution remains “difficult.”

During a discussion with reporters on Air Force One, Trump provided an update on the ongoing negotiations. He mentioned that U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff might soon have discussions with Jared Kushner, his son-in-law, and others in Moscow.

“We’re having good talks,” Trump noted. “Ukraine is doing well. I think they’re pretty happy with the situation. I’d like to see this end, but we’ll have to wait and see. Well, we’re making progress.” He also reflected on the challenges faced, saying, “We have resolved eight wars, and we thought this time would be one of the relatively easy ones because of our relationship with President Putin, but this is probably one of the most difficult wars. There is a lot of hatred.”

In a related note, NATO’s chief expressed confidence that Trump’s peace proposal could succeed, despite the ongoing challenges in the talks.

Trump emphasized that Europe has a significant role in ensuring Ukraine’s security to deter any future aggression from Russia.

Recently, the Trump administration faced criticism for presenting a 28-point peace plan to U.S. lawmakers. Some lawmakers described it, including some from his party, as a mere “wish list” regarding Russia.

In his address, Trump downplayed the peace plan, describing it as “just a map.” He clarified further: “What was there was just a map. It wasn’t a plan. It was a concept. And from there they took each of the 28 points and then went down to 22 points. A lot of them were resolved and were actually resolved very favorably. So we’ll see what happens.”

Trump mentioned that, while negotiations are making strides, there isn’t a specific deadline to reach an agreement. “The deadline for me is when it’s over,” he remarked, suggesting that the ongoing conflict has wearied many, adding, “They’re losing, they’re losing too many people.”
