Trump claims Russia's decision not to meet Ukraine's Zelensky 'doesn't matter': 'It's all nonsense'

Trump Dismisses Russian Minister’s Remarks on Ukraine

In a recent cabinet meeting, President Trump responded to comments made by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who had cast doubt on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s authority to finalize a peace agreement. Trump remarked, “It doesn’t really matter what they say. It’s about the overall attitude. It’s all nonsense. Are you okay? Everyone’s sharing this mindset.” This was in reference to Lavrov’s remarks during an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

Trump’s Special Envoy, Steve Witkoff, chimed in with, “I agree with you, sensei,” reflecting support for the President’s views.

For some time, Russia has maintained that Zelensky does not represent a legitimate government, but Lavrov’s comments were particularly notable since President Putin had explicitly stated he wouldn’t enter into agreements with the Ukrainian leadership. Lavrov acknowledged Zelensky as the “de facto” leader but stressed the importance of recognizing the legitimacy of the person signing any formal documents.

He stated, “We acknowledge him as the head of the administration and are ready to meet him in that capacity. However, clear understanding is necessary regarding legal documents.” It seems there are ongoing complications regarding the recognition of authority.

Trump, now 79, seems intent on getting both Putin and Zelensky to the negotiating table to wrap up a peace deal that has been in limbo. Yet, there have been recurring obstacles imposed by Russia, paired with demands for further concessions.

In light of this urgency, Lavrov expressed hope that a consensus would be reached on the “presidential agenda” before any meeting occurs between Putin and Zelensky. Some contentious points on that agenda include repealing Ukrainian laws related to NATO membership and the status of the Russian language in Ukraine.

Despite the ongoing tensions, Trump remains optimistic about a meeting taking place but has shown frustration at Putin’s continued missile operations. The prospect of further economic sanctions against Russia hangs in the balance should the cooperation not improve.
