Trump clarifies abortion stance after stating 6-week ban is ‘too short’

Republican presidential candidate and former President Donald Trump made his position on abortion clear on Friday, after previously saying the six-week abortion ban was “too short.”

Trump Fox News Last weekend, he announced he plans to vote against Florida's Amendment 4 “abortion rights initiative.”

“The Democrats are radical”

If passed in the November election, the amendment would add language to the Florida Constitution's Declaration of Rights stating, “No law may prohibit, penalize, delay, or restrict abortion before viability as determined by the patient's health care provider or when necessary to protect the patient's health.”

In 2023, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) passed the Heartbeat Protection Act, which bans abortions after six weeks of pregnancy. This amendment seeks to remove those restrictions.

In an interview with NBC News on Thursday, Trump said he thinks “six weeks is too short.”

“We need more time. I told them I want a few more weeks,” Trump said.

When asked if he would vote for Amendment 4, he replied: “I'm going to vote that we need more than six weeks. So that you can understand, everyone Roe v. Wade It had been suspended for 52 years. I worked through it. They wanted to bring it back to the states. The exception meant a lot to me, to Ronald Reagan and to other people who have been on this very interesting and difficult path.”

The Trump campaign released a statement after the interview, seeking to clarify Trump's position amid backlash from pro-life activists.

“President Trump has not yet said how he will vote in Florida's referendum, but has simply reiterated that he believes six weeks is too short,” said Caroline Leavitt, national spokeswoman for the Trump campaign.

On Friday, the governor referred to his earlier comments, telling Fox News that he plans to vote “no” on Florida's amendment because Democrats have become “radicalized” in their support for abortion up to nine months, but he reiterated that six weeks is “far too short a period.”

“The reason Democrats are radical is because it's an absurd situation where you can have an abortion at nine months,” Trump said, “and in some states, like Minnesota, you can actually execute babies after they're born, and that's just not acceptable.”

Trump also said he plans to cover the costs of in vitro fertilization treatments, and told Fox News that his campaign plans to release more details about the plan in the coming weeks.
