President Trump has stated that he interprets a now-deleted Instagram photo by former FBI Director James Comey, showing beach shells arranged to form “8647,” as a call for assassination. He indicated that the Justice Department would address its implications.
The post, which many viewed as inciting violence against Trump, was widely criticized among his supporters.
“He knew what he was doing. Even a child would understand. If you’re the FBI director and don’t grasp that it signals assassination, then you’re not paying attention,” Trump remarked.
“While he may not be very adept, he’s certainly aware of the message. He did this because people like me appreciate the positive direction our country is heading. He’s hinting at the assassination of the president.”
In response to a question about Comey’s earlier apology—where he claimed he never intended to suggest violence—Trump replied, “He apologized because he faced backlash.”
When pressed for a potential response, Trump deferred to Attorney General Pam Bondi, stating, “I don’t want to make a definitive statement because it involves her and other excellent people. Despite that, I think it’s terrible,” adding, “Given his background, if he had a clear record, it might be different.”
“He’s a dirty cop, a dirty cop,” Trump asserted. “If he had a clean record, maybe there could be some forgiveness, but I’m pushing for the right decision.”
Comey has been a long-time critic of Trump, having been dismissed from his role at the FBI in 2017. He also supported Democratic candidates like former Vice President Harris in 2024 and President Biden in 2020.
Directors from Homeland Security and National Intelligence have echoed concerns about Comey’s insinuation of “assassination” against Trump. Meanwhile, a representative from the Secret Service mentioned they are looking into what could be seen as a potential threat.
