Trump Praises British Soldiers Amid Controversy

President Donald Trump recently expressed admiration for British soldiers who fought alongside American forces in Afghanistan, attempting to clarify earlier criticisms he made about NATO allies.

Previously, Trump had suggested that NATO troops were “somewhat removed” from direct combat in Afghanistan, a comment that stirred significant backlash in the UK. Prime Minister Keir Starmer described these remarks as “insulting and frankly appalling.”

In a post on Truth Social, Trump acknowledged the sacrifices made by British troops, writing, “Our great and brave British soldiers will always be with America! 457 people died in Afghanistan; many seriously wounded, but they were among the greatest of all warriors.” He emphasized the lasting bond between the two nations, stating, “With an extraordinary heart and soul, the British Army is second to none (except the US!). We love you all, and always will!”

This social media statement seems to partially retract his earlier criticisms of NATO, made during an interview on Fox Business, where he noted, “We never really asked them anything. They’ll say they sent troops to Afghanistan… They remained a little to the rear, some distance from the front line.”

Starmer’s office confirmed that he raised concerns about Trump’s comments in a phone call with him this weekend. Additionally, a spokesperson mentioned that the Prime Minister highlighted the heroism of British and American soldiers who served in Afghanistan, many of whom made the ultimate sacrifice.

Trump’s remarks also attracted criticism from Prince Harry, who had two tours of duty in Afghanistan. He stated, “I served there, I made lifelong friends there, and I lost friends there,” underscoring the need to share these experiences with “truth and respect.” Harry expressed a commitment to unity and diplomacy in defense of peace.
