Trump Praises San Francisco Mayor’s Efforts Amid Crime and Drug Concerns

During a Cabinet meeting on Thursday, President Donald Trump expressed appreciation for Mayor Daniel Lurie, acknowledging his efforts to improve San Francisco’s situation after moderates assumed leadership. “There’s a mayor who’s trying very hard. He’s a Democrat, but he’s working very hard,” Trump remarked in a video broadcasted by CNN.

He went on to critique the limitations of Lurie’s role, stating, “He can’t do what we do. He can’t take people out of the city and return them to their home countries, where many had been imprisoned. We’re doing things they can’t.” Trump noted the severity of the issues, mentioning, “There were drug dealers, top-level drug dealers. Murderers. 11,888 people murdered. We can do more effective work.”

The discussion veered from the initial topic of the Iran war to address broader concerns regarding illegal immigration and crime in cities governed by Democrats. Trump claimed, “We can make it much safer than we are now. San Francisco has been a great city and could be great again.”

He emphasized Lurie’s challenges and dedication: “They’re moving very slowly… I hope that continues, but, you know, there’s a tremendous chance. The mayor is genuinely trying, and I told him, he just wants a chance.” Trump concluded with a hint of urgency, indicating his willingness to assist but emphasizing that quick improvements were necessary.

Lurie, elected in 2024 after defeating incumbent London Breed, has shifted away from lenient policies on crime and homelessness that some argue have contributed to the city’s troubles. Moderate Democrats in San Francisco are now increasingly concerned about progressive candidates who might undermine recent efforts to stabilize the city.

A group known as Neighbors for a Better San Francisco has raised $10 million aimed at local elections to ensure the city stays on its centrist path amid fears of a growing progressive influence, according to recent reports.
