Investigation into Suspected Bomb Plot Near RAF Fairford

Counter-terrorism officers in Gloucestershire, UK, are exploring potential links to Iran in a suspected bomb plot after explosives were discovered in three vans intercepted close to RAF Fairford, a military base managed by the U.S.

The police received a report at 12:45 a.m. local time on Sunday about three suspicious vehicles reportedly heading toward the base. Later that day, images surfaced online depicting the detention of five men, although authorities have yet to release their identities or nationalities.

This incident led to the urgent evacuation of 85 households in the small village of Whelford, directing residents to Cirencester Leisure Centre. A 400-meter cordon was established around the white vans while Army bomb disposal robots examined the interiors.

While investigators are keeping all options open as they delve deeper into the case, official confirmations suggest that counter-terrorism officials are actively considering a possible connection to Iran, according to reports.

The five men were originally detained on charges related to explosives but were later re-arrested on suspicion of preparing to carry out a terrorist act.

Ongoing investigations in the Gloucestershire countryside are aimed at determining whether the explosives found are indeed functional.

President Donald Trump commended the swift actions taken by British authorities, describing their response to the threat as “amazing.” He noted the suspects had posed a significant risk, stating that they had been under surveillance for a considerable time.

“It was an amazing job. We had them under investigation. They were looking to do big damage to our fort. And working with the British worked out great,” Trump said during a press conference in Chicago.

This series of arrests unfolds amid ongoing tensions between the U.S. and Iran. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran has previously indicated that any base involved in operations against Iran would be deemed a “legitimate target.”
