Trump Praises Vance and Rubio Amid Peace Commission Meeting
President Donald Trump has described Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as “extraordinary” politicians, highlighting how their strengths complement each other in advancing the MAGA platform on a global level.
The newly inaugurated Peace Commission, designed to support the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip and coordinate post-war stabilization efforts, convened its first meeting on Thursday in Washington, D.C. Delegates from over 40 countries attended the event, where Trump expressed his admiration for both leaders during a speech directed at foreign officials.
This meeting follows Rubio’s recent trip to Germany, where he spoke before the Munich Security Council. His address criticized unchecked mass immigration and its destabilizing effects on Western civilization, resonating with conservative audiences back home.
Vance Criticizes AOC’s Munich Moment
In 2025, Vance led the U.S. delegation at the Security Council, where he delivered a significant speech as President Trump took office. He warned that European governments were trending towards censorship through policies aimed at controlling speech and suppressing religious freedom.
During his remarks, Trump noted that while Vance and Rubio have “very different” diplomatic styles, their outcomes are essentially aligned.
Trump began by lauding Vance for his impressive academic achievements, sharing a light-hearted anecdote about Vance’s remarkable college accomplishments and his marriage to Usha Vance, who was slightly ahead of him academically.
Rubio Shines on Global Stage
Describing Vance as a “brilliant” friend, Trump acknowledged that he can be “a little tough at times” and sometimes needs to be encouraged to moderate his directness.
In discussing Rubio, Trump pointed out that he embodies a contrasting approach. “We’re at the opposite extreme now,” he said, noting how Rubio operates with a more diplomatic style, which can be more subdued yet effective.
Vance has previously called Rubio “the administration’s closest friend” in public statements, underscoring their collaboration during key diplomatic talks.
Trump jokingly referenced Rubio’s successful speech at the Munich conference, sharing his initial thoughts of potentially firing him but quickly added, “Just don’t get ahead of yourself, please.” The interplay highlights the camaraderie and competition between the two leaders.
Following their recent discussions with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and their joint appearance at the Olympics, Vance’s foreign policy profile faced scrutiny when U.S. forces captured Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro. His absence during Trump’s visit to Mar-a-Lago led to speculation, though his office clarified that both he and the president were limiting their public appearances together for security reasons.
Media Speculation Addressed
In response to the media’s portrayal of potential conflicts, Vance stated, “I think it’s very interesting that the media is trying to create this kind of conflict where there’s none.” He reiterated his commitment to working closely with Rubio and furthering the president’s agenda.
