Trump Celebrates Peace Deal Amid Nobel Concerns
President Trump expressed his satisfaction on Friday regarding a newly announced contract aimed at resolving the conflict between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. However, he also shared his disappointment about not being likely to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in the agreement or for other international efforts during his presidency.
According to a State Department announcement made on Wednesday, Rwanda and Congo are set to sign a contract intended to put an end to hostilities in eastern Congo, where rebels had seized control of a key city earlier this year amidst accusations against Congo for backing them. The U.S. became involved in facilitating peace talks at the request of Congolese President Felix Tsekedi.
In a post on True Society, Trump hailed the agreement as a “great treaty,” describing it as a significant achievement for both Africa and the broader world.
Despite this, he expressed concerns about potentially not receiving accolades for this diplomatic success, particularly given the multitude of other conflicts that have involved U.S. intervention.
“I won’t get the Nobel Peace Prize for this,” he remarked. “I won’t win it for stopping the war between India and Pakistan, or for resolving tensions in places like Serbia and Kosovo,” he stated, referencing other global conflicts.
This announcement from Trump came shortly after Pakistan revealed it had nominated him for the Peace Prize. Recent agreements between India and Pakistan to cease hostilities followed days of escalating violence between the nations, a development that Trump has downplayed.
On the campaign trail, Trump has often mentioned his belief that he deserves the award, which former President Obama famously received in 2009.
In terms of his nomination, this marks Trump’s fifth time being put forward for the accolade. The Nobel Peace Prize nominations can come from a diverse group of individuals, including university professors and members of national assemblies. In the past, even names like Michael Jackson and FIFA were entered into the nominations.
As Trump put it, “No matter what happens, whether it’s related to Russia/Ukraine or Israel/Iran, people are aware of the Nobel Peace Prize. That’s what truly matters to me!”
