Trump Administration’s Plan for Stay-at-Home Parents
The Trump administration is reportedly making moves to allocate federal funds aimed at supporting married couples who have faced income loss due to one parent taking on the role of a stay-at-home caregiver for their children.
This proposed policy seeks to “promote a traditional view of families” by potentially allowing payments to parents who opt to stay home and raise their children. The initiative would utilize finances from an existing program that assists parents employed outside the home, according to a report from the New York Times, which cited sources familiar with the ongoing discussions.
As per the article, “The change would create the only federal subsidy to pay parents to stay home and raise their children, marking a significant step by the Trump administration to use federal funds in support of a traditional family structure.”
To achieve this, officials plan to tap into a fund from the Department of Health and Human Services, originally established in the 1990s to help low-income and working-class parents afford childcare while they work or pursue education.
The proposed rule indicates that parents staying home with their children could benefit from this program, which generally provides about $9,000 annually per child. This could potentially transform the landscape of federal childcare funding.
Data from the Bipartisan Policy Center suggests that families nationwide typically spend over $13,000 each year per child on childcare.
“The $12 billion Child Care and Development Fund, administered by the Health Department’s Administration for Children and Families, was initiated during the Clinton era to support the employment of low- to moderate-income parents. It helps cover costs for childcare for children up to age 13, currently benefiting approximately 1.3 million children,” the Times report highlighted.
During the 2016 presidential campaign, in which Trump defeated Hillary Clinton, he proposed various childcare reforms and claimed that his opponent lacked a viable childcare plan, according to Breitbart News at the time.
Among his proposals was a plan to revise the tax code to allow working parents to deduct childcare expenses for up to four children and elderly dependents from their income taxes.
In June 2024, Breitbart News noted that “stubbornly high inflation is complicating the challenges of raising a child in President Biden’s America,” highlighting the struggle as prices continue to climb.
