CNN commentator Van Jones said on CNN’s “The Situation Room” on Thursday that former President Donald Trump could choose Kermit the Frog as his running mate and Republicans would still vote for him.
“What do you think about the fact that almost all of Trump’s running mates have been very critical of him so far?” moderator Wolf Blitzer asked.
Jones said, “Well, just about every person on the planet has criticized Trump because he does things that deserve criticism. He’s been indicted, he’s impeached, he’s insulting, he’s a terrible person. If you have a child like that, you would be very concerned. You certainly wouldn’t hire someone like that. So there are very few people, whether they have the same last name as Trump or not, who haven’t criticized him. So Trump has to swim in those waters.”
He continued, “That being said, last time he had to pick somebody. He was trying to unite the party. He had a problem. How do you get the evangelicals on your side? How do you get the business community on your side? He had to pick Pence. He has no problem with this party now. He can do whatever he wants. He’s behaving in a way that’s totally unacceptable, but they all want to vote for him. So he gets a chance to go on this little reality TV competition. And at some point, he’s literally just going to throw darts, because there’s no one in this party that’s not going to vote for him.”
Jones added, “Evangelicals, business and grassroots movements are not going to stand up to this guy and say he’s behaving in a way that is unacceptable for a leader of America. They’re all going to cave. So now it could be Rubio or it could be Tim Scott or it could literally be Kermit the Frog. They’re still going to give him the same number of votes, and he knows it.”
