New National Holidays Established by Trump

Earlier this year, President Donald Trump announced the creation of two new national holidays, one of which has already been celebrated. So, when can we expect the next one?

It’s coming up soon and should already be noted on your calendar.

During an announcement in May, Trump emphasized that these holidays are meant to honor the conclusion of both World War I and World War II. He remarked, “We won two world wars, but we never celebrated it—everyone else will!” Trump expressed a desire for the U.S. to join its allies in commemorating the victory in World War II, pointing out that it’s the only country not honoring this achievement.

The first of these new holidays, marking the end of World War II, was on May 8th.

The next holiday is set for November 11th, which is already recognized as Veterans Day. This day was made a legal holiday in 1938 to honor those who served in the American military and were honorably discharged.

Initially known as Armistice Day, it was designated to celebrate World War I veterans. Later, the day was rebranded to honor all veterans from various wars. In the UK, France, Australia, and Canada, similar commemorations occur on or around November 11th for veterans of both World Wars.

Trump had proposed renaming Veterans Day “World War I Victory Day.” However, White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt clarified shortly after that Veterans Day would retain its name, and the new holiday would merely serve as an additional observance.

If you’re already planning to observe November 11th for Veterans Day, that continues to be recognized. As a federal holiday, it means banks and government offices will be closed; for those in the military, it’s still a day of significance.

Trump previously commented on the crowded holiday calendar in the U.S., indicating that the country wouldn’t close for two “very important holidays.”

The next day you’ll likely have off work is Labor Day, coming up on September 1st.
