Michael Avenatti Released from Prison
A lawyer who represented an adult film actress in her efforts to remove President Donald Trump from office has been released after completing a sentence for defrauding a client.
Michael Avenatti, often referred to as “creepy porn lawyer” by Tucker Carlson, was convicted of attempting to rob and embezzled as much as $25 million from Nike and others, including actress Stormy Daniels. In June, he received a sentence of 11 years and three months on various charges.
It’s reported that he was emotional in court before sentencing.
At one point, Avenatti was seen as a formidable opponent against Trump. He speculated on a potential presidential run, but acknowledged the significant challenges he would face.
Daniels alleged that Trump had paid her hush money before the 2016 election to keep her silent about an alleged affair, which critics dubbed election interference.
Avenatti’s sentence will allow him to serve roughly four years at a Hollywood nursing home until September 2028. According to TMZ, he was released early as several of his sentences were permitted to run concurrently. He’s also been instructed to avoid illegal substances and undergo mental health treatment.
In the media frenzy surrounding Avenatti, he became somewhat of a celebrity. Co-host of “The View,” Ana Navarro, once compared him to a figure of the Holy Trinity, humorously suggesting he should co-host the show.
“You’re like the Holy Spirit to me these days,” she remarked in August 2018. “You’re everywhere on cable news. If you’re interested, we’ve got a seat open!” to which Joy Behar added, “He’s here to save the country!”
However, Avenatti’s relationship with Daniels soured when she publicly accused him of neglect and of raising funds for her legal expenses without her consent. He was later convicted of stealing $300,000 from her, resulting in an additional four-year prison sentence.
In 2021, he was sentenced to two and a half years for an attempted extortion scheme involving Nike. Similar to previous occasions, he reportedly shed tears during the court proceedings.
The next year, he was sentenced to 14 years in federal prison for stealing from a client and obstructing the Internal Revenue Service, leading to his outrage last June.
Avenatti was ordered to pay around $6 million in restitution. Although accused of domestic violence by an ex-girlfriend, he denied those claims, and no charges were filed against him.
