Trump Criticizes Crime Rates in Chicago
On Tuesday, President Trump described crime in Chicago as “out of control,” attributing blame to “liberal judges.” His comments followed a disturbing incident involving a woman who was set on fire in the city, allegedly by a man with a long history of criminal offenses—72 arrests to be exact—who had been released on bond despite prosecutors’ objections.
During a White House event earlier that day, Trump urged Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson to allow the National Guard to assist in addressing the rising violence in the city. This plea comes shortly after the attack on 26-year-old Bethany McGee and additional violent incidents, including a shooting that resulted in a teenager’s death and injuries to several others.
“This is a very serious situation,” Trump stated. “They burned this beautiful woman on the train. One man was arrested 72 times—think about that. And they let him go again. Liberal judges keep releasing him.” He emphasized that the situation in Chicago was alarming.
For quite some time, Trump has been advocating for the deployment of federal troops in cities like Chicago, similar to previous deployments in Los Angeles, Washington D.C., and Memphis, claiming these efforts significantly reduced crime rates. However, both Pritzker and Johnson have firmly opposed such measures, labeling them as unconstitutional and arguing that Chicago does not face the dire situation described by the White House.
“But we’re ready,” Trump asserted. “We’re moving toward Chicago. We have a governor who seems unconcerned about the rising death toll.” He further indicated that without intervention, Chicago could face severe consequences.
Reed, the suspected attacker, had faced multiple legal issues, including an order for electronic monitoring after a prior conviction related to an incident in a psychiatric hospital. Notably, he had repeatedly violated the conditions of his release leading up to the attack on McGee.
As these events unfolded, the White House issued statements criticizing crime policies attributed to the city’s leadership. According to a spokesperson, “Liberal crime mitigation policies are failing and endangering law-abiding citizens,” while also expressing concern for McGee’s wellbeing.
In the ongoing discourse surrounding crime in Chicago, many see the attack on McGee as part of a troubling trend involving repeat offenders targeting innocent individuals. Critics argue that the current judicial approach fails to keep dangerous individuals off the streets, allowing violence to persist.
