Trump criticizes ‘fake news’ for asking about Qatari plane.

On Monday, President Donald Trump found himself in a heated exchange with ABC News reporter Rachel Scott. She pressed him on whether a $400 million luxury jet given to the Pentagon by the Qatari royal family could be seen as a personal gift to him.

This confrontation, during a signing ceremony at the White House, escalated as Scott mentioned a previous $16 million defamation settlement involving Trump and the network. Trump praised the donation, dismissing any insinuation of impropriety.

“I would never turn down such an offer,” he asserted, adding, “I mean, I could be foolish and say, ‘No, we don’t want a free, very expensive plane,’ but I viewed it as a great gesture.”

Things took a turn when Scott questioned Trump’s viewpoint, asking, “What do you say to those who see it as a personal gift for you?”

In response, Trump pushed back, stating, “You’re ABC fake news, right? Only ABC. Well, some of you should be ashamed to ask that. They’re giving us a free jet. Or, thank you.”

Scott tried to clarify, referencing his background as a businessman and suggesting that receiving such a valuable gift might raise eyebrows.

Trump countered, saying, “This isn’t a gift for me, it’s a gift for the Department of Defense. You ought to know better. This network is a disaster; ABC is a disaster.”

Despite the administration’s stance that the jet symbolizes goodwill towards the U.S. government, ethical watchers expressed concerns, particularly regarding transparency and foreign influence amid Qatar’s efforts to enhance its standing in Washington over the years.

The Pentagon is expecting the luxurious Boeing Business Jet, which they claim comes without strings attached. In contrast, Air Force One, a modified Boeing 747, is aging, with both aircraft over 30 years old.

Boeing is contracted to deliver an updated version, yet they have experienced significant financial losses on this project, resulting in delivery delays.

Trump plans to adapt the Qatari aircraft for presidential use, intending to incorporate secure communications and other classified features. However, experts suggest it may have limited capabilities compared to current Air Force aircraft under construction.

ABC News initially reported on this donation, raising eyebrows about the implications of receiving such an extravagant gift from a foreign monarchy that has close diplomatic ties with Trump’s administration.

In December, ABC and anchor George Stephanopoulos settled a lawsuit with Trump for $16 million, which stemmed from a March 2024 broadcast that falsely implicated him in a civil lawsuit filed by writer E. Jean Carroll. The judges concluded that while Trump was liable for sexual abuse and defamation, he was not found guilty of rape.
