Trump Critiques Giants’ Late-Game Decision Against Lions
President Donald Trump recently expressed his frustration with the New York Giants’ strategy during their game against the Detroit Lions. Specifically, he criticized the team’s choice to attempt a touchdown rather than opting for a field goal that would have extended their lead from three to six points.
Quarterback Jameis Winston failed to connect with tight end Theo Johnson, resulting in a turnover on downs. This misstep allowed the Lions to advance downfield and ultimately tie the game with a field goal. Detroit then secured a victory with a touchdown by Jahmil Gibbs, ending the match at 34-27 in overtime.
Trump echoed the sentiments of Malik Nabors, who also found fault with the Giants’ decision. Nabors had posted about it on X but later deleted his remarks. Trump shared his thoughts on Truth Social, pondering, “Why didn’t the New York Football Giants kick that field goal?? Who would do that? It was crazy! I watched the end and thought, ‘That’s weird!!!’
Nabors, currently sidelined with a torn ACL, reacted shortly after the game, expressing his disbelief at the play call. He questioned why they didn’t pass the ball instead of running it, which seemed to waste timeouts without yielding any points. “Soccer common sense!!!! Am I missing something?” he wrote.
Giants interim head coach Mike Kafka maintained the rationale behind the decision during his postgame press conference. “We wanted to be proactive,” he explained, stating that they aimed to capitalize on the moment and establish a two-score lead, believing they could maintain their momentum.
As a result of this loss, the Giants’ season record fell to 2 wins and 10 losses, effectively eliminating them from playoff considerations.
