Israel Strikes Beirut Amid Escalating Tensions
In a development that may add complexity to the delicate peace discussions between the United States and Iran, Israel reportedly conducted airstrikes on Beirut following a previous attack by Hezbollah.
President Donald Trump took to Truth Social to express his stance, stating, “Israel has the right to defend itself.” However, he criticized the strike on Lebanon and urged “all sides” to de-escalate as negotiations progress.
He emphasized, “This morning’s attack on Beirut should not have happened, especially on a day when we are so close to a Peace Deal with Iran. While Israel can defend itself, the initial attack was minimal; there were no casualties, and it shouldn’t hinder this critical process.”
Trump continued, “We are on the verge of a Deal that could foster peace across the region, even in Lebanon. All sides should refrain from further attacks—Israel should halt their operations in Lebanon, and other parties, including Hezbollah, should not strike Israel. This could mark the onset of lasting peace—let’s not jeopardize it!”
Earlier, on Saturday, Trump had mentioned that an agreement was expected to be finalized on Sunday.
As reported, Hezbollah launched several drones towards northern Israel on Sunday, prompting the IDF to retaliate by targeting a Hezbollah command center in Beirut. According to Lebanon’s Civil Defense Ministry, three individuals lost their lives in the Israeli strikes.
Iranian officials have condemned the Israeli actions, indicating it may jeopardize the ongoing negotiations. Yet, during an interview with CBS News, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth expressed skepticism that the attack would derail the agreement.
