Trump criticizes reporter for suggesting Qatar gift is a bribe: ‘You should feel embarrassed for asking that question.’

Trump Responds to Reporter Over Qatar Gift Allegations

During a recent event in the Oval Office, President Donald Trump addressed a reporter’s suggestion that a lavish gift from Qatar may be inappropriate. The reporter, Rachel Scott from ABC News, questioned Trump’s stance on the extravagant Boeing 747-8 jet that Qatar’s ruler intends to offer for presidential use.

In a somewhat combative exchange, Trump remarked, “You should know enough because you are embarrassed enough, and so are your network!” He didn’t hold back when criticizing the reporter’s line of questioning.

When asked how he would respond to those who might consider the luxurious aircraft a personal gift, Trump shot back, “You’re fake ABC News, right?… you’re embarrassed to ask that question!” He elaborated on the situation, stating that the idea of paying for a gift was nonsensical. “They are giving us free jets,” he explained. “I could say, ‘No, I want to pay you a billion dollars,’ or I could say ‘Thank you.’”

Trump insisted that the plane is not for his personal enjoyment but is intended for the Department of Defense, reiterating, “Your network is a disaster. ABC is a disaster.” This came in response to ongoing criticisms claiming that the gift could be seen as a bribe. The White House has maintained that they sought legal counsel and found no issue with the gesture.

The emoluments clause in the Constitution prohibits public officials from accepting foreign gifts without congressional approval, adding to the controversy. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer criticized the gift, stating, “I won’t say anything ‘the first in the US’ like the Air Force brought to you by Qatar. It’s not just bribery; it’s premium foreign influence with extra legroom.”

Interestingly, this wasn’t the first tense interaction between Trump and Scott. In a previous interview with the National Association of Black Journalists, Trump had similarly criticized Scott for her handling of questions. “I don’t think you’ve ever been asked in such a horrible way,” he remarked, suggesting a lack of courtesy in her approach.
