Former Georgia Lt. Governor Switches Parties
In a significant political shift, Jeff Duncan, who previously served as Georgia’s lieutenant governor, has transitioned from the Republican Party to the Democrats. He indicated that this decision reflects his ongoing struggle to embrace a neighborly spirit as a Republican.
Duncan has been vocal about his criticisms of Donald Trump’s immigration policies, suggesting they’ve been misguided. He shared these thoughts in an article for the Atlantic magazine.
In his announcement, Duncan stated, “My journey to becoming a Democrat started well before Donald Trump’s actions around the 2020 election.” He served as lieutenant governor from 2019 to 2023 and emphasized that his Republican affiliation hindered his ability to genuinely care for others.
He has also opposed Republican efforts aimed at reducing fraud in welfare programs, particularly criticizing budget cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Duncan pointed out the significance of initiatives designed to feed hungry children in schools, and he touched on other progressive issues such as Medicaid, gun control, and immigration.
“Recent immigration policies have become examples of how not to show love for one’s neighbor,” he argued, describing current practices as “military-style assaults on law-abiding families” with the intent to provoke reactions on social media.
Donald Trump reacted to Duncan’s party switch with a dismissive remark, stating, “Good riddance. We didn’t want him as a Republican anyway.”
Trump referred to Duncan as a “complete loser,” attributing his departure to the Republican Party’s lack of support for him. “There’s no chance!” he added.
Thus, the GOP sees another notable exit as political landscapes continue to evolve.
