Trump Criticizes NFL’s New Kickoff Rules

President Donald Trump expressed his disdain for the NFL’s recent kickoff rule changes, labeling them as “Sissy Football.” In a post on True Society, he questioned the quick implementation of such a significant decision, expressing concerns about its safety implications. He remarked, “It’s just as risky as a ‘regular’ kickoff and frankly doesn’t look good. The ball is in motion, but the players aren’t. ‘Cissy’ football is detrimental to America and reflects poorly on the NFL for pursuing these foolish ideas!

The NFL altered these kickoff rules with the intent of enhancing player safety, aiming to reduce the severe head-on collisions that could result in long-term injuries.

Last season, the league introduced a new setup where kickers kicked from their own 35-yard line while the coverage team aligned itself on the opponent’s 40-yard line.

If the ball touches the ground or a player in the designated landing zone, returns cannot be made from the 20-yard line to the goal line, nor can it touch the end zone.

The receiving team positions nine players between the 35-yard and 30-yard lines, ensuring at least six are at the 35-yard mark and two are in the landing zone. The right kick must land in that area.

Despite the change, the new rule did not lead to a significant drop-off from last year’s record, with kick returns decreasing from 21.8% to 32.8% last season. The touchback rate was at 64.3%, according to ESPN.

On the brighter side, concussions resulting from returns saw a 43% decline, which is noteworthy.

To encourage more returns, the NFL moved the touchback spot from the 30-yard line to the 35-yard line, effectively adding five yards.

Teams that returned kicks last year started at an average of the 28.8-yard line, which means they were only giving their opponents a minimal edge of 1.2 yards from where the ball was booted from the end zone.

Currently, based on last year’s data, that difference stands at 6.2 yards.

This isn’t the first occasion Trump has criticized the NFL’s kickoff format. He remarked back in February about the Super Bowl, stating how disappointing it was to see the field freeze during a kickoff as the ball traveled through the air. “College football avoids this, so why should we suffer through it?” he questioned.
