Trump Condemns Deadly Shooting at Jewish Museum
President Trump expressed his outrage over a tragic shooting that occurred outside the Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C., resulting in the deaths of two Israeli embassy staff members and injuries to three others on Wednesday night.
While meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa at the White House, Trump stated that the shootings were driven by hatred and radical ideology. He emphasized, “These horrifying DC murders, clearly based on anti-Semitism, must now be over! There is no hatred and extremism in America,” and mentioned his hope for a true society.
Police reports indicate that the victims, a male and female staff member, had just left an event hosted by the American Jewish Commission at the museum when the incident unfolded.
The shooting occurred near the museum, located at 575 Third St NW, adjacent to the FBI Field Office and the U.S. Lawyer’s Office.
Authorities have identified the suspect as 30-year-old Elias Rodriguez from Chicago. According to DC Police Chief Pamela Smith, Rodriguez was seen pacing outside the museum before the shooting.
Rodriguez was reportedly able to enter the museum before being apprehended by security. He reportedly confessed to the shooting during his arrest, while chanting “free and free Palestine.”
The U.S. ambassador to Israel noted that the victims, who were dating, were anticipated to become engaged soon.
Ted Deutch, CEO of the American Jewish Commission, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. “We are devastated by the loss of two precious friends and partners from the Israeli Embassy who were shot dead as they left the AJC event,” he said. “This is a shocking act of violence, and our community is drawing closer tonight.”
He continued, “We mourn alongside the victims’ families and all Israelis. May their memories be blessed. While the police investigation continues, it appears this attack was motivated by hatred against Jews and the state of Israel. Such senseless hatred and violence must come to an end.”
