President Trump is aligning himself again with libertarian ideals, as he criticized Representative Thomas Massey on Tuesday, branding his fellow Republicans as “losers.” This comes after Kentucky’s political landscape has shown some willingness to reconsider laws that limit presidential war powers.
Massey, who has won three elections in Kentucky, often speaks about his dedication to protecting the Constitution—even as Trump claims he’s doing the opposite. The president has indicated plans to challenge Massey significantly in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections.
At 54, Massey has consistently opposed Trump’s actions, particularly a military strike against Iran, labeling it unconstitutional and resisting a current bill that’s being promoted.
Republicans in Kentucky are joining forces with Representative Ro Khanna (D-Calif) in a bipartisan resolution aimed at preventing U.S. involvement in the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran.
After a ceasefire was announced on Monday evening, following increasing exchanges of fire between Israel and Iran, Massey indicated he might reconsider his stance on war powers resolutions. “I spoke with Speaker Mike Johnson just now and told him if the ceasefire holds, they may not push the resolution,” he informed reporters, taking a cautious “wait and see” approach.
Trump’s grievances with Massey extend beyond his partnership with Khanna. He expressed frustration, saying, “Why does everyone want to support what’s known as ‘Reno, Reno’? They’ll just want to hike your taxes by 68%. He always votes ‘No!’ and thinks it makes him look cool—but really? He’s just a loser!”
Massey has been somewhat unfazed by Trump’s criticism. Just this past Sunday, he responded to the president’s remarks on social media.
In reaction to the ongoing conflict, Massey asserted that Trump might struggle to defeat him. “I’ve raised $120,000 in the last 24 hours,” he declared. “The reality is that the president despises losing, and I think that day is coming soon. He’ll have some votes, and I predict he won’t win all of them.”
