Rep. Jerry Nadler Announces Retirement
Representative Jerry Nadler from New York, facing significant disapproval from many American voters, has declared that he will not run for re-election next year. This announcement came on a Tuesday.
Nadler, who currently enjoys a popularity rating of only 17%, noted his decision to retire after 32 years in Congress was not made lightly, but he believes it to be the right choice. He is likely to face several viable challengers in the upcoming Congressional race.
Support from his fellow progressive colleagues is evident. For instance, Texas Representative Greg Casar lauded Nadler’s career, saying it reflects a commitment to various social issues including workers’ rights and LGBTQ rights.
In contrast, former President Donald Trump, a frequent target of Nadler’s critiques, expressed indifference regarding Nadler’s impact during his time in office, labeling him as one of the worst politicians in American history.
Trump’s disdain for Nadler is not new and seems rooted in their longstanding conflict over significant real estate developments in Manhattan, particularly involving Trump’s proposed projects.
Nadler has been known for his fierce opposition to these developments, arguing that they would not serve the city properly. Over the years, he has also been vocal against Trump, particularly during investigations related to alleged Russian interference in the election.
Reflecting on generational changes within the party, Nadler mentioned that observing President Biden prompted him to consider passing the torch. He expressed a desire to respect the need for new leadership.
