Trump Deploys the Nation's Biggest Aircraft Carrier to the Caribbean

USS Gerald R. Ford Arrives in the Caribbean

America’s largest aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford, made its way to the Caribbean on Tuesday. It joined eight other warships along with a nuclear-powered submarine already in the area.

The Pentagon announced plans to bolster efforts to disrupt drug trafficking and weaken transnational criminal organizations.

President Trump has directed the USS Gerald R. Ford to the region amidst claims from Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro, who alleges that the U.S. is gearing up for an invasion to change the regime.

In response, Maduro’s government declared a “massive deployment” of its military forces and ensured that the nation’s military arsenal was fully operational, citing a need to counter what they view as an “imperialist threat” from U.S. forces.

The Gerald R. Ford, previously stationed near Croatia, had to navigate both the Mediterranean and Atlantic Oceans to reach its current position. The carrier strike group includes two guided missile destroyers, the USS Bainbridge and the USS Mahan, in addition to the missile defense ship USS Winston S. Churchill.

With more than 4,000 sailors and numerous tactical aircraft onboard, the Gerald R. Ford enhances the ability of U.S. commanders to project power at sea. According to U.S. Southern Command, this first-in-class carrier can launch and recover fixed-wing aircraft simultaneously, day or night, during mission operations.

Admiral Alvin Holsey, commander of Southcom, emphasized that the deployment of the carrier strike group is a crucial step toward securing the safety of the Western Hemisphere and American homeland.

The USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) is the lead ship of a new class of nuclear “supercarriers,” with its construction beginning in 2005 and commissioning in July 2017. Its first significant deployment started in May 2023.

Notably, this aircraft carrier can transport over 75 fixed-wing and rotary-wing military aircraft, which sharply increases its offensive capabilities, especially with advanced fighter and bomber jets like the F-35. The supercarrier operates in the vicinity of Venezuela and has a crew of around 4,000 personnel.

This military buildup in the Caribbean represents the largest U.S. military presence in the region since the Panama invasion in 1989. Analyst Mark Cancian from the Center for Strategic and International Studies remarked that the Gerald R. Ford’s arrival signifies the start of Trump’s next strategic maneuver in Latin America.

Cancian noted, “This is not an asset that they can leave there indefinitely. They need to use it or move it. And moving it means they stop.”
