Trump’s Big Bill Faces Senate Challenges

President Trump expressed frustration on Friday about the Senators who seemed desperate to salvage his “big beautiful bill,” which has stalled after a number of significant cost-cutting proposals were dismissed by Republicans.

On Thursday, Congressman Elizabeth McDonough decided against including a GOP plan intended to slash federal Medicaid funding by hundreds of billions to support Trump’s tax agenda.

“The Congressman can be a bit challenging, and I have to say I don’t agree with Congress on some points, though he was reasonable in other respects,” Trump mentioned at a press briefing, referring to McDonough.

The White House moved forward after Alabama’s Senator Tommy Tuberville (R) reacted to the Medicaid ruling, with Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) looking to remove McDonough’s influence.

When questioned about McDonough on Thursday, White House spokesperson Caroline Leavitt remarked that Trump is “a part of the process; it’s an internal mechanism in the Senate, and I want to see this bill completed.”

Trump had previously urged Republicans to finalize the bill by July 4th, but on Friday he hinted there might be flexibility regarding the deadline.

“It’s significant. It’s not the end of everything, but ideally, I’d prefer to wrap it up by then,” he stated.

He was also asked on Friday what actions he has taken to actively support his key legislative goals in the Senate.

“It’s a terrific bill. It’s a huge tax reduction,” Trump pointed out.

“I wonder if they’ll manage to get votes from Democrats. We might be… Fetterman may appear to be the wisest choice these days,” he added, implying that Senator John Fetterman (D-Pa.) could support the legislation.

Congress has ruled that certain provisions will proceed under the Bird Rules, a series of evaluation criteria for budget reconciliation packages that examines issues like core budgetary focus.

If any element fails to meet these criteria, it cannot be included in a bill passed through budget reconciliation, which is crucial since these rules help the legislation bypass filibusters.

Thune indicated that his leadership team has a “contingency plan” to keep the bill advancing; however, if the proposal falls through, leaders will need to devise new ways to save hundreds of billions to cover the costs tied to some corporate tax cuts becoming permanent.
