Trump designates DC as a ‘crime-free zone’ while urging cities to ‘collaborate with us’

Trump declares DC a 'crime free zone' in push for cities to 'work with us'

Trump’s Call for Crime Reduction in Democratic Cities

President Trump has labeled Washington, D.C., as a “crime-free zone,” suggesting that other Democrat-led cities collaborate with his administration to decrease crime rates.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump praised Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) for her popularity, encouraging other Democrats to embrace federal support similar to her approach.

He remarked, “Wow! DC Mayor Muriel Bowser was extremely popular because she worked with my great people to defeat me and my great people in DC so that there is virtually nothing.”

Trump contrasted Bowser’s strategy with that of other prominent Democratic leaders who have called for federal intervention, including Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, Maryland Governor Wes Moore, California Governor Gavin Newsom, and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson.

He emphasized that Bowser’s responses have been much more effective compared to those of her peers. Instead of justifying violent crimes, he seemed to suggest, other leaders should consider a more proactive approach.

Trump urged cities like Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and Baltimore to aim for similar outcomes. “It could happen quickly!” he declared.

Later, he congratulated Bowser but cautioned against complacency, asserting that D.C.’s success should be maintained: “DC is a huge victory that must never be over!!!”

Following Trump’s federal deployment order on August 7, crime statistics showed a 14% overall decrease in Washington, D.C., with violent crime dropping by 39% compared to the same time frame in 2024, according to Metropolitan Police data.

Specifically, murders fell by 58%, robberies by 57%, and sexual abuse cases by 40%. Interestingly, lethal weapon assaults saw an 8% rise, but carjackings—a type of robbery—plummeted by 82%.

The city has also reported a significant drop in property crimes year-over-year: robbery decreased by 49%, car thefts by 35%, and overall thefts slightly increased by 1%.

Meanwhile, the MPD saw a 25% rise in arrests, a 20% increase in firearm recoveries, and a 14% boost in service calls.

During a recent press conference, Bowser underscored the necessity for additional police officers, emphasizing that the federal surge provided essential support to the MPD.

“This federal surge has seen a significant rise in crime in Washington, D.C., and we are very grateful for the surge in executives to bolster what the MPD can do in this city,” she noted.

Bowser acknowledged, “When neighborhoods feel safer and are safer,” the impact of the surge becomes evident.

However, she has previously stated that the presence of ICE agents and out-of-town National Guard troops “do not work.”

On Sunday, Homeland Security Secretary Christy Noem hinted at potential federal law enforcement actions in Chicago and other Democratic cities in response to Trump’s measures in D.C.

In a conversation on CBS News’ “Face the Nation,” Noem indicated plans to “add more resources” to law enforcement efforts in Chicago.

“We already have ongoing operations with ICE in Chicago and Illinois and across other states, and we are making sure we maintain the law, but we are going to add more resources to those businesses,” she stated.
