Trump directive permits federal employees to convince colleagues their faith is 'right'

The administration recently issued a memo focused on safeguarding religious expression for federal employees. It highlights that these employees can engage with colleagues about their religious beliefs, insisting that they might even try to convince others of the correctness of their views.

The memo specifies that certain actions, like displaying Bibles, religious artwork, and posters with religious messages, are permissible and won’t lead to disciplinary actions. It suggests that employees may engage in religious conversations and even attempt to persuade others about their faith, provided these discussions aren’t overtly harassing.

Additionally, federal employees are encouraged to invite their colleagues to partake in religious activities, like prayer, alongside other personal activities. The memo comes with a reminder that such expressions should not impede business operations.

Scott Kupor, from the Human Resources Management Office, noted the collaboration with the White House to produce this guidance, underscoring its importance for accommodating personal religious expression.

The memo elaborates on how federal workers could discuss their faith and encourage others to reconsider their beliefs, while also respecting requests for non-engagement from those not interested in such conversations.

Specific examples, such as having a Bible or religious symbols on desks, or forming prayer groups, were mentioned. The document also referred to instances like park rangers participating in prayers at veteran hospitals, illustrating acceptable religious expressions in the workplace.

The memo asserts that the federal workplace should be welcoming to those practicing their faith and points out that allowing religious discrimination is against the law and could hinder the recruitment and retention of talented employees.

This memo is aligned with an executive order aimed at addressing anti-Christian bias and offers protection against religious discrimination for federal employees.
