Trump’s Administration Seeks Legal Clarity on SNAP Funding Amid Shutdown
President Donald Trump announced on Friday that his administration will quickly pursue legal advice regarding funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which supports millions of Americans.
As the government shutdown drags on for nearly a month, Democrats have been blocking temporary funding measures, which puts 42 million Americans at risk of losing their SNAP benefits. In response, President Trump has instructed White House lawyers to approach the courts for clarification on how funds can be legally disbursed to states that are unable to issue benefits due to funding gaps.
Trump stated, “Government lawyers aren’t convinced we have the legal authority to pay SNAP with the funds currently available. There have been two conflicting court opinions on our legal options. We want to ensure that Americans don’t face hunger just because Democrats are holding the government hostage.”
He emphasized further, “I’ve told my attorneys to seek court clarification on how to legally fund SNAP as soon as possible. We’re already behind schedule as Democrats continue to halt government operations, right up to the payment date. Even if we get guidance right away, it could still take time for states to rearrange their funding. I’d be more than willing to provide funding, similar to what I do for military and law enforcement salaries, provided the courts give us sound legal direction.”
Additionally, Trump accused Senate Democrats of purposefully obstructing funding initiatives for political gain during the shutdown.
“Democrats need to stop pretending that they are harming people for their political advantage and reopen the government now. If you’re reliant on SNAP benefits, contact Senate Democrats and urge them to get the government back to work! Here’s Senator Schumer’s office number: (202) 224-6542,” he added.
