The White House announced that federal law enforcement will be active in Washington, D.C. for the next week, starting late at night. This initiative is spearheaded by the U.S. Park Police and incorporates officers from various agencies, including the FBI, DEA, and ICE, among others. Federal law enforcement units will be clearly marked during this period.
This move comes shortly after President Trump hinted at possibly taking control of the D.C. police department, following violent incidents involving former government staff. Trump remarked, “Washington, D.C. is a fantastic city, but it has suffered from violent crime for far too long. By increasing the presence of federal law enforcement, we aim to protect innocent citizens. There’s no safe haven for violent criminals in D.C. tonight. The President is focused on ensuring that our nation’s capital is secure for residents and visitors alike.”
Trump has often clashed with local D.C. authorities, voicing his concerns about crime and homelessness, and has threatened to assert control over the city during his second term.
Meanwhile, statistics show that crime in D.C. has actually dropped, reaching a 30-year low with a 35% decrease from the previous year in 2024. Data indicates this decline is ongoing.
However, the recent assault on former staff member Edward Coristine rekindled concerns. Two 15-year-olds have since been arrested in connection with an attempted carjacking related to the incident.
This latest order follows the formation of D.C.’s “Safe and Beautiful Task Force,” aimed at ensuring effective federal involvement in immigration enforcement, monitoring sanctuary cities to adhere to federal laws, and reallocating resources to address local immigrant issues.
