Trump Dismisses Governor Cook Over Mortgage Fraud Allegations
President Donald Trump announced the firing of Governor Lisa Cook on Monday, citing allegations of mortgage fraud as the basis for his decision. In a letter shared on social media, Trump stated that there were sufficient grounds to remove her from her role.
“I have determined that there is enough cause to remove you from your position,” Trump’s letter read.
Cook, who was appointed by former President Joe Biden in 2022, faces serious allegations from Bill Pruto, the head of the federal housing finance agency. Pruto accuses Cook of committing mortgage fraud by listing two significant residences. Trump has indicated he would let her go if she doesn’t resign voluntarily.
Pruto’s initial claims included a photo of a document allegedly signed by Cook. The properties in question are two major homes in Michigan, one referred to as “Atlanta Condominiums.”
Despite Trump’s demands for her resignation, Cook has stood firm, asserting, “I will not be bullied to resign from my position due to some of the questions raised in the tweet.”
She emphasized her commitment to transparency, stating, “As a member of the Federal Reserve, I take my financial history seriously, so I gather accurate information, answer legitimate questions, and provide facts.”
In his letter, Trump expressed that Cook’s alleged misconduct has undermined public confidence in the Federal Reserve. “The Federal Reserve plays a crucial role in setting interest rates and regulating banks,” he wrote. “The American people need to trust the integrity of those who are in charge of these policies. Given your deceitful and potential criminal acts, that trust is clearly lacking.”
