Former President Trump on Thursday responded to Vice President Harris’ acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention, rejecting the notion that she had gained support in the polls.
President Trump responded live to VP Harris’ remarks on Truth Social, and called into Fox News immediately after the VP finished speaking.
Fox News host Martha MacCallum noted that since becoming the Democratic nominee, Harris has seen her popularity grow in the polls, particularly among female, black and younger voters.
“She’s had some success in that regard at this point. What are you going to do, what’s your strategy to regain the momentum that you’ve gained among voters?” McCollum asked.
“No, she’s not successful. I’m successful. I’m popular with Hispanic voters. I’m popular with black men. I’m popular with women, because women want security,” Trump said.
“No, Martha, that’s just how it looks to you,” he added. “We’re doing very well in the polls.”
Polls have shown that Harris has overtaken Biden’s lead nationally and in key battleground states since replacing him at the top of the candidate list in late July. The nonpartisan Cook Political Report gave Harris an edge in three battleground states last week, and a poll it released last week showed her leading Trump in five of the seven battleground states that will decide the November election.
Trump, both in his Truth Social post and on Fox, heavily criticized Harris’ speech, questioning why, as vice president, she didn’t do more to address the issues she spoke about, like immigration and inflation.
“The biggest response is, why didn’t she do what she was complaining about? All the things she talked about … but she didn’t do anything,” Trump said.
They also took issue with Harris’ efforts to directly link Trump to Project 2025, a policy plan from the conservative Heritage Foundation that lays out a blueprint for the next Republican administration. Democratic speakers this week highlighted controversial proposals in the document that Trump has repeatedly distanced himself from.
“She knows I have nothing to do with Project 25,” Trump said. “They dumped it. A group of people got together and did something. I never saw it. I don’t want to see it.”
