After winning Super Tuesday, former President Donald Trump used his victory speech to shift focus to the general election, forcing the United States to make tough choices when he faces President Joe Biden, who is likely to be the Democratic nominee this fall. he told supporters at the rally.
“November. The 5th will be remembered as the most important day in our nation’s history,” President Trump said, referring to Election Day. He added: “We have seen our country take a huge hit over the past three years.”
Trump’s only opponent in the Republican race, Nikki Haley, withdrew from the race Wednesday after winning one state, Vermont, but left Republican voters in 14 other states choosing Trump. I was watching. She didn’t support Trump and said it was up to him to “earn the votes” of Republicans and people who didn’t support Trump.
“I hope he does,” she said.
President Trump is on track to become the first president since Grover Cleveland in the 1800s to win a presidential election, lose reelection, and then regain the White House. On Super Tuesday, nine states received at least 70% of the vote, but only two (Vermont and Utah) received less than 60%, and perhaps a third (Massachusetts, with 59.5% of votes still being counted). (9%).
Biden also carried the Democratic ticket on Super Tuesday, winning all 15 states (13 with at least 80% of the vote), losing only the territory of American Samoa.
Biden also referenced the general election in posts on social media.
“Today, millions of voters across America spoke out and showed they are ready to fight back against Donald Trump’s extreme plans to set us back.” Said. “Every generation of Americans will face a moment when they must defend our democracy. This is our fight.”
The United States has not had a rematch in a presidential election since the 1950s. Republican Dwight D. Eisenhower defeated Democrat Adlai Stevenson in 1952 and again in 1956. Cleveland lost to Benjamin Harrison in 1888, and defeated Harrison in 1892, becoming the last major party candidate to make amends.
Opinion polls for the general election show that Trump and Biden are tied. A Morning Consult poll released this week had Biden in the lead, while a CBS News poll had Trump in the lead.
Trump could formally clinch the Republican nomination next week.
In his victory speech, President Trump focused on the border crisis, which is expected to be a major theme this fall. He said Democrats “want open borders, and open borders will destroy our country. We need borders.”
“We’re going to take our country back,” he said.
