Trump edges out Biden in New Hampshire in post-debate poll

A poll released Monday showed former President Trump trailing President Biden by two points in New Hampshire, signaling a big gain for Trump following Biden’s lackluster performance in last week’s debate.

of Saint Anselm College Poll Forty-four percent of New Hampshire voters said they would support Trump if the election were held today, while 42% said they would support Biden — a 12-point difference from a similar poll in December, when Biden had a 10-point lead in the state.

Biden underperformed in New Jersey, despite Democrats holding slight leads over Republicans in party registration and the popular vote, where 46 percent of voters favored Democrats when told only the party name, and 43 percent favored Democrats, the poll showed.

“After an incredible six months in which he swiftly vanquished his primary rivals and became the first former president to be convicted of a felony, Donald Trump has erased a 10-point deficit in the polls to lead President Joe Biden by just two points,” Neil Levesque, president of the New Hampshire Institute of Politics, said in a statement.

Trump also leads Biden among key moderate voters, with 44% approving him to Biden’s 38%.

Both candidates remain unpopular among voters, with just 39% of respondents having a favorable view of Biden and 42% having a favorable view of Trump. Among those who dislike both candidates, 30% supported Biden and 13% supported Trump.

Even though 81% of poll respondents said they watched the first presidential debate last week, only 19% said it would influence their vote. 54% of respondents said Trump won the debate, while just 6% said Biden won.

New Hampshire is considered “Democratic leaning,” according to The Hill/Decision Desk Election Projections. A statewide average of polls excluding the latest St. Anselm poll shows Biden leading Trump by 3.7 percentage points.

The Saint Anselm College poll was conducted June 28-29 among about 1,700 registered voters and has a margin of error of about 2.3 percentage points.
