Trump Endorsement Helps Mike Johnson Close Deal on Speakership

Critics of House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Los Angeles) are chiming in after President-elect Donald Trump put his thumb on the scale.

Mr. Johnson ended the 118th Congress failing in government funding battles and angering conservatives, moderates, and even Mr. Trump himself, making it highly unlikely that he would retain the gavel until the next Congress. It seemed to me.

Trump appears to have saved Johnson with a single post on Truth Social.

The former and future president has left Mr. Johnson in hot water for more than a week after Mr. Johnson failed to deliver on Mr. Trump's demand to raise the debt ceiling in a federal funding bill.

Without any further word from Trump, many Republicans began publicly expressing reservations about voting for Johnson.

Since President Trump's Dec. 30 statement, several Johnson resistance factions have coalesced around him.

Congressman Warren Davidson (R-Ohio) on board“President Trump wants Chairman Johnson.''

Incoming Rep. Brandon Gill (R-Texas), who will join the House Freedom Caucus, also noted President Trump's support for Johnson. Gil Posted This is to implement Trump's policy that “President Trump wants Chairman Johnson, so Mike is the best choice!''

Paul, who earlier this year worked with Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) to force a motion to override the vote that could have ousted Mr. Johnson.・Congressman Gosar (Republican, Arizona) made the announcement with the support of President Trump. he will now vote Even for Johnson.

Johnson isn't out of the woods yet.

Mr. Massey has made it clear that he will not vote for Mr. Johnson, and if all the members scheduled to vote vote, he will not lose any more Republicans.

However, it may be unlikely that any more Republicans will stand up to Trump.

Among the lawmakers still weighing their options, Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) and Rep. Victoria Spartz (R-IN) are the most high-profile. They were among a small number of members of the House Freedom Caucus who met with Mr. Johnson in the Speaker's Office on Capitol Hill on Thursday.

With support from President Donald Trump, these protests are seen as part of negotiations with Mr. Johnson and are likely to secure promises on the bill on the floor and the structure of the powerful House Rules Committee.

The 119th Congress will meet Friday at noon Eastern time for a roll call vote of the Speaker.

Mr. Johnson's election is far from certain, but he will be grateful to Mr. Trump if he retains the gavel after a tumultuous 14 months in office.
