Trump endorses Mike Johnson for House speaker

President-elect Donald Trump endorsed Mike Johnson for Speaker of the House on Monday, following a fight over government funding that divided the Republican Party and jeopardized his leadership bid earlier this month.

Mr. Trump, 78, clashed with Mr. Johnson over the chairman's decision not to suspend the debt ceiling, but remained committed to backing the Louisiana Republican to take back the gavel in January.

“Chairman Mike Johnson is a good, hard-working, and godly man,” the president-elect wrote on Truth Social. “He will do the right thing and we will continue to win. Mike has my full and complete support. MAGA!!!”

The soon-to-be 47th president is working with tech billionaire Elon Musk and fiscal hawks in the House Republican conference to block an early draft of a funding bill that would lift the debt ceiling on federal spending. I was thinking of connecting it to.

On December 20, Congress passed a slimmer version of the bill that eliminates the debt ceiling provision while cutting other costly provisions.

In his post, Trump criticized the “extremely expensive” campaigns of Democratic nominees President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, calling both administrations “sinking ships.”
