Trump Declares a Preference for Classical Architecture in Federal Buildings
In a move reflecting his affinity for traditional style, President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday that endorses classical architecture as the preferred design for federal construction projects. This directive emphasizes that federal buildings should enhance public spaces, inspire citizens, and be clearly identified as civic structures.
The language in the order resembles a previous one from President Joe Biden’s administration, which promoted similar architectural ideals but was rescinded in 2021.
“Architecture—especially traditional and classical designs—is the favored choice for federal public buildings,” the executive order details, particularly for those in the Columbia district. It also notes that other architectural styles aren’t prohibited.
The text clarifies that while classic designs are preferred, alternative styles can still be considered when appropriate. Interestingly, Trump’s order doesn’t just focus on aesthetics; it also considers construction costs and reliability.
This emphasis on classical styles in federal architecture aims to blend beauty with functionality, striving for buildings that are not only visually appealing but also practical and inclusive, catering to everyone including those with disabilities.
