Trump exhaustion: Golden Globes host explains her decision to avoid political humor

Golden Globe Awards Take a Light-Hearted Turn

During the 83rd Golden Globe Awards, host Nikki Glazer expressed her hope for a mostly non-political event. However, she didn’t shy away from injecting some humor into the night, even if it meant being a bit risky with her jokes.

Reading from her phone, Glazer began by critiquing Immigration and Customs Enforcement. She joked, “I was going to walk into a store one day and say, ‘I hear the bar is out of ice. And we don’t really need ice. And the truth is, I hate ice.'” Yet, later she reflected on this and thought it might have oversimplified the situation. “Even that felt too trivial… It’s hard to strike the right tone,” she admitted.

Political Jokes and Celebrity Responses

Glazer also revealed that the president rejected a suggestion from Steve Martin to rename the venue “Trump Beverly Hilton.” She mentioned, “Don’t say the man’s name now. I just want to give you some space.” However, it seems many celebrities in attendance didn’t quite align with her approach of keeping things bipartisan. Some wore protest pins advocating against ICE, featuring slogans like “Ice Out” and “Be Good,” the latter referencing Renee Good, who was tragically killed by ICE agents.

Despite her intentions, Glazer couldn’t resist poking fun at the network airing the awards, jokingly labeling CBS News as “America’s newest place to watch BS News.”

Jokes that Didn’t Make the Cut

Glazer also shared some jokes that didn’t make it to the stage, including playful jabs directed at nominees like Sean Penn and his co-star Leonardo DiCaprio. For instance, she teased, “I think it’s to read my girlfriend’s ID. To make sure the year starts with 2.” It seems she’s less attached to her discarded material now, focusing more on creating fresh jokes instead.

Ultimately, the awards night featured a blend of humor tinged with critique, reflecting a complicated relationship between entertainment, politics, and the ongoing cultural discourse.
