Trump Expresses Interest in Meeting Kim Jong Un During Asia Tour

During a recent press briefing, U.S. President Donald Trump indicated a willingness to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. He mentioned that it would be great to connect, saying, “I would love to meet him,” if Kim expresses interest. This statement came while he was aboard Air Force One, as he traveled through Asia.

Trump had just arrived in Malaysia for the ASEAN meetings and had interactions with Emperor Naruhito. He noted a positive rapport with Kim, asserting, “I have a good relationship with him.” Furthermore, he hinted he might adjust his travel plans if North Korea shows a willingness to engage. “It’s our last stop, so it’s very easy,” he added regarding the possibility of extending his trip.

North Korea is known for its authoritarian regime, where numerous individuals are imprisoned for their beliefs, especially for practicing Christianity or opposing communism. Throughout his first term, Trump focused on efforts to curb North Korea’s nuclear ambitions, which are a significant threat to South Korea and Japan. His approach included three historic meetings with Kim, making him the first sitting U.S. president to step foot in North Korea back in 2019.

Relations between the two countries took a downturn following the inauguration of President Joe Biden, who has been criticized by North Korea as “stupid” and senile. Since then, Biden’s administration has had limited engagement regarding the Korean Peninsula. Despite this, Kim seems to hold some regard for Trump, sending him a congratulatory note in 2024 after a close call during his campaign.

The North Korean state media reported that Kim hoped for Trump’s speedy recovery at that time. Over the course of his second term, Trump has expressed several times his desire to reconnect with Kim, reiterating his openness to a meeting just prior to heading to Malaysia.

He mentioned, “The last time we met, I announced on the Internet that I was coming to South Korea. If he wants to meet, I’ll be happy to do so.” Trump’s optimism is evident, especially since he previously stated he was “100 percent” open to the idea of meeting Kim again.

However, it’s important to note that the North Korean government has not announced any intentions for Kim to meet Trump. In fact, state media has reported that North Korea is concentrating on strengthening its ties with Russia and China, which are seen as primary rivals to the United States. Kim’s foreign minister has even engaged in discussions with Russian officials, highlighting a growing collaboration between their nations.

Additionally, Kim recently attended the groundbreaking for a museum honoring North Korea’s military operations, where he expressed unwavering support for Russia amid ongoing conflicts. His previous meetings with Trump have included discussions in Singapore, along the inter-Korean border, and in Vietnam, though negotiations came to a halt during their last encounter in 2019.

In retrospect, Trump remarked, “Sometimes you have to walk, and this is just one of those times,” referring to the challenges faced in negotiations at that time.
