Trump files a lawsuit against Jamie Dimon and JPMorgan Chase regarding debanking

Trump Sues JPMorgan Chase Over Account Closures

Former President Donald Trump has initiated a lawsuit against JPMorgan Chase, claiming that the bank, along with its CEO Jamie Dimon, terminated his accounts and those of his affiliates in early 2021 due to political motivations. This decision came soon after Trump left office, following the chaos at the U.S. Capitol on January 6 and the subsequent confirmation of his defeat in the presidential election.

In this legal action, Trump and his co-plaintiffs are pursuing at least $5 billion in damages. They argue that JPMorgan’s actions stemmed from a desire to align with current political sentiments and shed any connections with Trump’s conservative views.

The lawsuit, filed in Miami-Dade County, accuses the bank of making decisions based on social and political pressures rather than sound business practices. The complaint suggests that such a precedent could lead to consumers being denied banking services based on their political opinions, which raises considerable concerns.

In addition to these claims, the suit alleges trade defamation, as well as a breach of an implied contract regarding fair treatment. It also mentions possible violations of Florida’s Unfair and Deceptive Trade Practices Act by Dimon.

In response, JPMorgan Chase expressed regret over the lawsuit, declaring it to be without merit. Patricia Wexler, a spokesperson for the bank, emphasized that account closures are made not for political or religious reasons, but to mitigate legal or regulatory risks. She stated that the bank often grapples with rules and expectations that require such measures.

The bank urged both the current and previous administrations to reconsider regulations that necessitate these difficult choices and advocated against the so-called weaponization of financial institutions.

This is a developing story, and updates are likely to follow.
