Trump Floats Putting Tariffs on Countries Refusing to Take Back Illegals

Former President Donald Trump has proposed a policy that would impose U.S. tariffs on foreign countries that refuse to accept their citizens who are in the U.S. illegally and have been ordered deported.

Trump said at a town hall event in Phoenix, Arizona, on Thursday that he would impose tariffs on foreign countries that don’t help stop the flow of illegal immigrants at the southern border, including countries like China that often refuse to accept their citizens.

“We have a tremendous amount of economic power,” Trump said. “We have tariffs.”

Last month, Chinese authorities was suggested They are again cooperating with the U.S. government in accepting their deported citizens.

It’s unclear how many illegal Chinese immigrants ICE has deported to China. In April, authorities said they had carried out one deportation flight to China.

President Joe Biden’s term has seen an explosion in Chinese nationals arriving at the U.S. border. For example, in the first half of fiscal year 2024, approximately 25,000 Chinese nationals crossed the U.S. border and were encountered by Border Patrol agents — a 37,000 percent increase in just three years.

During the same period in fiscal year 2021, only 65 Chinese nationals were encountered by Border Patrol while crossing the U.S. border.
