President Donald Trump has been vocal about his worries regarding election integrity. As the 2026 midterm elections draw nearer, his team is actively taking steps. They’re reaching out to various states to bolster election security, and both Democrat and Republican officials are showing some resistance to these moves.
Reports indicate that the Trump administration has initiated multiple efforts across several states, examining voting equipment and gathering voter data. It seems the Justice Department has made what some are calling “an extraordinary step,” requesting at least nine states to duplicate their voter rolls.
Interestingly, in Colorado, things have gotten quite peculiar. A federal consultant affiliated with the White House reached out to county clerks, inquiring if federal authorities could inspect the voting machines. However, federal law typically prohibits such physical evaluations, though it does allow for technical assistance to state and local election officials.
Carly Copps, a Republican clerk in Weld County, expressed her concerns, stating, “That’s tough for me. For security reasons, no one has access to my voting equipment.”
A spokesperson from the White House opted not to clarify whether the agent, identified as Jeff Small, has any ties to the administration. Nonetheless, officials reiterated Trump’s commitment to ensuring that all voters have their rightful citizenship positions in the voter rolls.
That said, this initiative has sparked bipartisan disapproval. Samantha Taraj, CEO of the Non-Party Voting Rights Lab, remarked that “President Trump and his allies are trying to lay the groundwork to obstruct free and fair elections in 2026.”
In another note, the Department of Justice has taken similar actions, as previously reported, requesting voter roll duplication from at least nine states, with two already complying.
It’s crucial to point out that the Constitution generally limits federal oversight of election procedures in favor of states. Yet, following the last two presidential elections, there has been widespread anxiety regarding election security. Trump has consistently advocated for a more robust approach to ensuring election integrity.
In a lengthy post on Truth Social, Trump reiterated his administration’s focus on investigating alleged election fraud, asserting that “Kash Patel and the FBI must concentrate on investigating voter fraud, political corruption, Actblue, and the integrated stolen elections of 2020.”
He also declared, “The 2020 election was rigged and stolen, and they attempted to do the same in 2024. [Pam Bondi] I’m researching AG and other matters.”
