Trump: GOP shouldn't pass budget stopgap without 'assurances on Election Security'

Former President Trump on Tuesday appeared to further impede congressional Republican plans for an already shaky government funding bill, directing Republicans to oppose any measure that doesn't include “assures about election security.”

“Unless House and Senate Republicans can get absolute assurances about the security of our elections, they should not move forward with a continuing budget resolution of any kind,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.

The former president repeatedly False claims Democrats are intentionally trying to “stuff” voter rolls with illegal immigrants.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) recently introduced a government funding bill that combines a six-month continuing resolution with the Protecting Voter Status Act, a bill backed by President Trump that would require proof of citizenship to register to vote.

The White House called the attached voting proposal “irrelevant and cynical legislation,” and Democrats more broadly argue the legislation is unnecessary because it is already illegal for foreign nationals to vote in federal elections.

The length of the stopgap measures means the fight over the next round of funding will be postponed until March, but Republicans are hopeful that with President Trump back in the White House, he will be able to exert influence in the negotiations.

The proposal is unlikely to gain support in the Democratic-controlled Senate, and the White House has said President Biden would veto Johnson's proposal.
