Trump Pardons Former Tennessee Lawmaker and Associates

President Donald Trump has issued pardons for a former Tennessee lawmaker, along with his chief of staff and two fellow Republican lawmakers. They claim to have been unfairly targeted by the Biden administration’s Department of Justice.

On Friday, the president announced through media channels that he had pardoned Glen Casada, the former Speaker of the Tennessee House, and Cade Cothren, his chief of staff. Both individuals had pleaded not guilty but were ultimately convicted on corruption charges.

It’s reported that Casada and Cothren conspired with another unnamed Congressional member to engage a political consulting firm, Phoenix Solutions LLC, to raise funds for their benefit while obscuring their involvement. Allegedly, this arrangement was used to secure taxpayer-funded postal services from other state officials.

Officials from the White House stated that the Biden Justice Department “grossly over-prosecuted these individuals for minor issues involving mail carriers that concern voters.” They argued that the mail carriers were charged reasonable rates, had not received complaints from lawmakers, and that the total financial loss was below $5,000.

Furthermore, they criticized the Justice Department’s severe response, alleging that they proposed lengthy prison sentences akin to those for major fraud cases.

In September, Casada received a three-year prison sentence, while Cothren was sentenced to two and a half years. Casada faced convictions on 17 charges related to public corruption, while Cothren was found guilty on all 19 charges in their trial that commenced in April.

Casada had resigned in 2019 following a no-confidence vote from his Republican colleagues in Tennessee. Since Trump’s re-election in 2024, Cothren has taken to social media to express his support for the president, asserting that he’s being unfairly targeted by Democrats.

Trump has consistently voiced support for those he believes are victims of a “witch hunt” by the opposing party, despite facing his own legal troubles, including a conviction in New York related to business records.

Throughout his presidency, Trump has granted pardons to several political figures, including former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich, who was imprisoned after attempting to sell his Senate seat. Notably, Trump’s wide-reaching pardons also included many individuals involved in the January 6 Capitol riots, as well as commuting the sentences of others.
